She has done some amazing cards using geometric die cut pieces. Then a friend of mine, Margarita, on a Zoom call showed us how to piece together these gorgeous cards.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">After ordering some new papers, and finding some beautiful color combinations, I decided to make some cards myself. You essentially take a square piece of paper and cut it into four equal pieces to create four triangles.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Then you re-piece the squares using different colors. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Here's one I really love:</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTet-nvKswoA9tslMjyrKavqtL_SC1_8vVzapa4Z4cjbPrHSaYrvMvxKTs_khe4bG_vZm1x2v4Sf7W3s5WW99fJailQq5vFPoS5SsWEmjZsIm1ZHtsTDAgjjI5jOOKHWDZG7JRJYmJAeY/s4032/IMG_9042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTet-nvKswoA9tslMjyrKavqtL_SC1_8vVzapa4Z4cjbPrHSaYrvMvxKTs_khe4bG_vZm1x2v4Sf7W3s5WW99fJailQq5vFPoS5SsWEmjZsIm1ZHtsTDAgjjI5jOOKHWDZG7JRJYmJAeY/s320/IMG_9042.JPG" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: courier;">Quilters call this a quarter square triangle and many patterns are made with these triangles. </span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span></p>JulieRighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11008129430036620838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4870553668615239101.post-64203064937041966962023-05-12T16:30:00.000-04:002023-05-12T16:30:31.344-04:00Another hobby . . . QUILTING<p><span style="font-family: courier;">Well I've done it, gone down the rabbit hole and adopted a new hobby. It started with the gateway drug, sewing zippered bags and eventually here I am QUILTING. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">I'm so far behind in posting to my blog that I figure I'll just create a "deluxe" post of some of my quilting projects.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">My first quilt courtesy of Craftsy and a class by Christa Watson. She covered every step from start to finish and I'm really proud of this one. Particularly since the border pieces actually lined up perfectly with the sides of the quilt. The instructions had mentioned that if the border was too big, that you would have to increase the seams to "shrink it" down. Meanwhile, if it was too short, worse you would have to rip out the seams and ease out the seam allowance to "grow" the border. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkSz1Mxm6JJ-t27sSfFBV8wOo06PHPRJWgVhJPxNcxhQerxqTplHKR5D2vjZxKcGhRIv7esb8iXNmgqQCT7fUrzekqY0BP-7ajpUmo6jFMtQUPeUDO4I3U3BY9nAGRNCCx9qlL4mxqaNeKoYV3gHE6PmsWjOOXr9hGYMCFEbcavaNtO1Fe_x3gNq5S/s1024/blog%20-%201.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkSz1Mxm6JJ-t27sSfFBV8wOo06PHPRJWgVhJPxNcxhQerxqTplHKR5D2vjZxKcGhRIv7esb8iXNmgqQCT7fUrzekqY0BP-7ajpUmo6jFMtQUPeUDO4I3U3BY9nAGRNCCx9qlL4mxqaNeKoYV3gHE6PmsWjOOXr9hGYMCFEbcavaNtO1Fe_x3gNq5S/s320/blog%20-%201.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: courier;">Quilted bag</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: courier;">So I am a really big fan of Minki Kim who has a ton of videos on YouTube and this quilted purse is one of hers. I purchased her pattern for this zippered bag and used some really great fabrics I picked up in Florida on a trip during the winter. The bag and each of the pieces used are quilted and some of the fabrics I found were like mixed media artworks. They have such bold colors and textures, I couldn't resist using them for this project. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: courier;">I used zipper by the yard for this project and I am really a fan of this type of zipper. First, you can make the zipper any length and this is important for this project. Second, the zipper tabs are metal, but the teeth are plastic (they look like metal though) so the quality just goes up by a factor of 10. Finally, you can make a single or double zipper. Actually, just remembered another benefit of zipper by the yard, it comes with wider tape then regular zippers I've purchased online. This makes sewing with them a lot easier.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK3EWXGgfDlpvSBkK12E2RtHO7AyVF0kIkV5sQ2PxYl_iZMCPLIT7REkp7WQihmNr02Mv3yCpNeU9hCaSTopWfGiEnGFqzoAjeuoHXy0EWdxHWvBdatATIzcNwR_50GF8PrSMH5SFnRFFDSV33p9Ty9q4PwiXI8gBqHpmmXez25J9V5zIWQa56SCD1/s4032/blog%20-%207.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK3EWXGgfDlpvSBkK12E2RtHO7AyVF0kIkV5sQ2PxYl_iZMCPLIT7REkp7WQihmNr02Mv3yCpNeU9hCaSTopWfGiEnGFqzoAjeuoHXy0EWdxHWvBdatATIzcNwR_50GF8PrSMH5SFnRFFDSV33p9Ty9q4PwiXI8gBqHpmmXez25J9V5zIWQa56SCD1/s320/blog%20-%207.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Last, but not least is the quilt I made for my sister-in-law Sue for her birthday. I found this unique and clever fabric by Ruby Star called Darlings 2 and it was a layer cake. This means pieces cut 10 inches by 10 inches. I ended up finding a cute, and free, pattern on Fat Quarter Shop's site. I used a wavy decorative stitch on my machine to quilt the piece. I'm thrilled with how it turned out.</span></p><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM-8ltNZwhGmbrZGbktGC7sZe81nU_JLUIMmMaEy1IPX9Wgd22O0fdYQzGw8hr9FP2X9MyEZIwerayYfKRn6tx-gD7XOUE4TwjfDs5IXO3LlNSiWrjxuJY2lGehDfYkNwqHSPYzAx35nK3SlB3UlQc4n1QXL8Xadg-bUdK3ApwKviX09E5QBAGS8xG/s4032/blog%20-%208.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM-8ltNZwhGmbrZGbktGC7sZe81nU_JLUIMmMaEy1IPX9Wgd22O0fdYQzGw8hr9FP2X9MyEZIwerayYfKRn6tx-gD7XOUE4TwjfDs5IXO3LlNSiWrjxuJY2lGehDfYkNwqHSPYzAx35nK3SlB3UlQc4n1QXL8Xadg-bUdK3ApwKviX09E5QBAGS8xG/s320/blog%20-%208.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: courier;">Well, that's a wrap for now. I've been enjoying the quilt life but I think you're going to see me post soon about a new endeavor, sewing clothing. I'm taking a class to sew a dress and the pattern also works for a shirt. I hope to have a post soon about it!</span><p></p>JulieRighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11008129430036620838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4870553668615239101.post-75251722912740144042021-09-07T21:16:00.005-04:002021-09-07T21:21:28.904-04:00Another card inspired by Online Card Classes: Crushing on Cardstock<p> <span style="font-family: courier;">I had a blast using my new Hero Arts die sets. I ordered them after seeing great samples during the Online Card Classes with Kristina and Jennifer!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;"><a href="https://www.onlinecardclasses.com/crushingoncardstock/" target="_blank">Crushing on Cardstock</a><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Here's the card and I love how it turned out. I used several colors of Distress Oxide inks including Mowed Lawn, Shabby Shutters and Twisted Citron. The background die is the Hero Arts Leaves & Vines Fancy Die and it cuts out so easily. It's a joy to use this die! </span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">I left one die white in the background and colored another one with Distress Oxide inks. Then used the Hero Arts Flower infinity die set to punch the flowers and layer them up with the colored die pieces. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Such a happy card! I am obsessed with making zipper bags. I love making different kinds and thank heavens for YouTube because so many people will walk you through it, step by heavenly step.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Here's the link to my latest version by <a href="https://youtu.be/-hEm51BfhhU">Lauren Mormino</a></span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Let me know what you think. The inside is waterproof canvas, so it's a great bag for taking on trips to store bottles of shampoo, hairspray, etc. I've only just begun with these.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">I've done two different styles of boxed corners and I think I've changed my approach with this style of bag. I have to go slow, and with the vinyl you cannot flip the bag as easily (just once at the end is enough for me). You have to take your time and really line things up. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHGDU72yG3xhicieKjiznu_tfztLVUnfBsHQUhtUWQ7oB5YRCsq73SQCgGt4as8JN7yjM41TOpd8FCVdoTIwWGyQtnDKjqP5KYVbWVlXrUXqRro-2SMqmC9PoRRB92XnNWyjxpzxB03yQ/s2048/image_6487327+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1995" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHGDU72yG3xhicieKjiznu_tfztLVUnfBsHQUhtUWQ7oB5YRCsq73SQCgGt4as8JN7yjM41TOpd8FCVdoTIwWGyQtnDKjqP5KYVbWVlXrUXqRro-2SMqmC9PoRRB92XnNWyjxpzxB03yQ/s320/image_6487327+%25282%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: courier;">The bag below with the math fabric, I mean isn't it the best??</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ2eYU62lhO6n3YwKcCVkuriHHdJPgfofQNEJrQya4zZuS2mfBqz4NJeJY6MeyH0RCMyE6360ZAZZWBt2TWPe8ePvBxHmXAJ5oNmTqKKJ-kOH4MMSShxamQyq3AwPcWXvaXDmqxy99lEk/s2048/image_6487327+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2017" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ2eYU62lhO6n3YwKcCVkuriHHdJPgfofQNEJrQya4zZuS2mfBqz4NJeJY6MeyH0RCMyE6360ZAZZWBt2TWPe8ePvBxHmXAJ5oNmTqKKJ-kOH4MMSShxamQyq3AwPcWXvaXDmqxy99lEk/s320/image_6487327+%25283%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Thanks for visiting my little creative corner of the world!</span></p>JulieRighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11008129430036620838noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4870553668615239101.post-64301524247964707722021-03-23T17:00:00.001-04:002021-03-23T17:00:04.914-04:00Some Christmas joy from the archives<p><span style="font-family: verdana;">I'm sharing some fun cards from the archives. The stash of supplies and goodies that I had forgotten existed, stored in the corner of the basement in a white Elfa rolling storage unit, full of book and project kits. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">These are three Christmas cards that may have been intended as samples for a class. These cards are highly embellished and not realistic for my handmade cards as I make approximately 80 cards for friends, family and colleagues. T</span><span style="font-family: verdana;">he cost of mailing cards that are thick would require more postage, special mailers and would be prohibitive.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Anyway, hope you enjoy them. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">This first card was inspired by Impress. I printed this page from their web site in 2004 with this sample card. I came up with my own version that uses wire and aluminum tape for the ornament hangers. I also embossed the oval embellishment, which is a die cut, on the joy ornament. The embossing would probably not survive the USPS.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">However, this card did ultimately inspire my real life Christmas card. I can't put my hands on the actual card, but I did make a simpler version for my recipients based on this card idea.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj751QihuKUo3ecToM-g4QhgmLm9vsiRg69i3oXe_HIhTaMcu2WH-8nNENTiSLwFblJwmwQLZMMaVNNKNLxwQycyMtpmN5pMsK-9t0NksgknMvYHy1gHqdxx6C4j5yvRxLmD9EjXJ4dcZ0/s2048/image_123927839+%25284%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj751QihuKUo3ecToM-g4QhgmLm9vsiRg69i3oXe_HIhTaMcu2WH-8nNENTiSLwFblJwmwQLZMMaVNNKNLxwQycyMtpmN5pMsK-9t0NksgknMvYHy1gHqdxx6C4j5yvRxLmD9EjXJ4dcZ0/s320/image_123927839+%25284%2529.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;">This card uses a similar approach with embossing the die cuts and I just love the little embossed tag as well. The colors are non-traditional but they conjure cold winter weather.</span></div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRV1Ug13dHTBAUb_uIb849IZ0Cp6Ug2ZaGZVdUJ6DUzgNM-h2ncmUjrLUPsm14MoQzL-SbGaI7HfJmJHY7BsqJRIfxIF4MOW2Q274fXbadJGNWn7uqv9IJ1X8trILkDLL08kNmOwx0CoQ/s2048/image_123927839+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRV1Ug13dHTBAUb_uIb849IZ0Cp6Ug2ZaGZVdUJ6DUzgNM-h2ncmUjrLUPsm14MoQzL-SbGaI7HfJmJHY7BsqJRIfxIF4MOW2Q274fXbadJGNWn7uqv9IJ1X8trILkDLL08kNmOwx0CoQ/s320/image_123927839+%25281%2529.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Finally, this card has loads of clear buttons with decorative paper backing each one. The three messages are made from cardstock strips that were put through an old school manual label maker. To highlight the words I rubbed ink on the strips, to help the letters pop. As with the other two cards, not very practical but I do love how it turned out. Maybe I can adapt it in the future for one of my own holiday cards.</span></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbKE2F05liiY4FF9VZl6DGi61_ykqrqxNP-ZzyUUBW9jNftpxwA91fiXBOrD-0oBjMd7USid3V9_iPzgIYaDE_L3Xqk3Y0mmGJe-iWCNLm15NV1Rkqh-hGM8zoKVEJs4bHRrBDtgvu3pI/s2048/image_123927839+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbKE2F05liiY4FF9VZl6DGi61_ykqrqxNP-ZzyUUBW9jNftpxwA91fiXBOrD-0oBjMd7USid3V9_iPzgIYaDE_L3Xqk3Y0mmGJe-iWCNLm15NV1Rkqh-hGM8zoKVEJs4bHRrBDtgvu3pI/s320/image_123927839+%25283%2529.JPG" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Thanks for stopping by friends!</span></p>JulieRighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11008129430036620838noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4870553668615239101.post-19840430462250834972021-03-22T17:30:00.001-04:002021-03-22T17:30:05.681-04:00A trip through my archives<p> <span style="font-family: courier;">I'm not sure what is spurring a recent need to cull through my "hoard" but it has been a pleasant journey. I plan to post some of the fun finds. I'm realizing that it's been way to long since I've posted.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">My goal was to clean out old paperwork stashed in a full size file cabinet. I had forgotten that I had a full drawer full of class instructions and samples for classes I used to teach, as well as samples and information related to classes I've taken in the past. Since I no longer teach, it made sense that I could disassemble these packets and recycle/reuse the instructions and in doing this I discovered what I like to call "oldies but goodies."</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">I'm posting photos from a class I took on the 2005 Carol Duvall Crafting cruise. Karen Elaine Thomas was the teacher, and she demonstrated for Yasutomo. I'm such a fan of her projects as I love origami. This is an adorable passport case, but it can be anything. I'm going to stash this in my purse and use it for receipts. It's made from paper and she had us apply a coat of varnish to the finished project to help protect it.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">I found a video on YouTube where she makes a smaller version, but it's the same concept. I've been so busy creating that I seem to have trouble finding the time to blog about it. I'll be in catch up mode so the projects I'm sharing actually date back to the early days of Covid19. When we first had the shelter in place orders and all the traveling artists started sharing amazing demos.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">Dina Wakley is one of my favorite artists and I decided to take a Facebook class with her. I'm posting some of the pictures from the class where we made an interactive journal page.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: courier;">It's really interesting that I've done less journaling and more of other projects since the pandemic. </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCxe1Bkc01vpWdEb3Gk0BuKmIzoUVHvmEBGiDXp30dXVf1hxuGzpZaNtqyuZhjBIYLzOBLKfYHNrcuvS4LcSWEqlSf9pt-gm0i2Jboa1uYTODQ5xE6ScBmIuTq39FrvZlXzgx7UFZQHMY/s4032/IMG_8891.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCxe1Bkc01vpWdEb3Gk0BuKmIzoUVHvmEBGiDXp30dXVf1hxuGzpZaNtqyuZhjBIYLzOBLKfYHNrcuvS4LcSWEqlSf9pt-gm0i2Jboa1uYTODQ5xE6ScBmIuTq39FrvZlXzgx7UFZQHMY/s320/IMG_8891.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5up_UNYhZ6IUT8tddPhJ8F0k0RElwetRQDo2fBfSs4BYsy5ju5lUNYk60QDUrSzlEWqm1XzcDlUPS2dW1e_Gf4CbNUK7yFI85fHUAmBzpZR8HTe6u1JP4ddiPCy6LcAXpnxZD477E64Q/s4032/IMG_8890.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5up_UNYhZ6IUT8tddPhJ8F0k0RElwetRQDo2fBfSs4BYsy5ju5lUNYk60QDUrSzlEWqm1XzcDlUPS2dW1e_Gf4CbNUK7yFI85fHUAmBzpZR8HTe6u1JP4ddiPCy6LcAXpnxZD477E64Q/s320/IMG_8890.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs0VUDdAL2EDcC7VY7Ql3FbJz4f3wsGUv6SwHoUsHyzO5XBj3KKu7keLRpKapyRPWiZj7kZfqpEfqRrBIp_rWjGR41HJUN2jDbXjLUChAz5HWZsaZpF-D-EEVFQDwmhgoTT5TxGwIOvVI/s4032/IMG_8888.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs0VUDdAL2EDcC7VY7Ql3FbJz4f3wsGUv6SwHoUsHyzO5XBj3KKu7keLRpKapyRPWiZj7kZfqpEfqRrBIp_rWjGR41HJUN2jDbXjLUChAz5HWZsaZpF-D-EEVFQDwmhgoTT5TxGwIOvVI/s320/IMG_8888.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Yod_akU1BP12XYU__herpOMWH_QIpTCd1-f_omP0WJDV-6ilcXx3lb7rwYVhvnv2_aVJC_vUAIZKAc9sCXGHrTdQLISwBvY1j_WuOQ62VrbJoVgSCXvLVx5ggFhGrjadoQpOYIgYaw0/s4032/IMG_8887.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Yod_akU1BP12XYU__herpOMWH_QIpTCd1-f_omP0WJDV-6ilcXx3lb7rwYVhvnv2_aVJC_vUAIZKAc9sCXGHrTdQLISwBvY1j_WuOQ62VrbJoVgSCXvLVx5ggFhGrjadoQpOYIgYaw0/s320/IMG_8887.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj97ASoaJJL8fnCy67NtHzY7kgcBmphkU-ZOn7ZPCMW9WxpuPdagaYnFbW7VEMYMlPzSivZFoxY8m4KZmYGJAVRvKrNg0SLYyE2zhhoqOR8JBIzJhiGO1K7yqhyeutwy08Cy5EpM2Ip5j8/s4032/IMG_8886.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj97ASoaJJL8fnCy67NtHzY7kgcBmphkU-ZOn7ZPCMW9WxpuPdagaYnFbW7VEMYMlPzSivZFoxY8m4KZmYGJAVRvKrNg0SLYyE2zhhoqOR8JBIzJhiGO1K7yqhyeutwy08Cy5EpM2Ip5j8/s320/IMG_8886.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigQe8ezK_HOIVBOC97XuKvW7_wOP7uesoOfHoBa58yxnwQiOWr6Gw6Z5s7qUA4lB2KErUoI3tHG_XdMJwh6cAitxI5zPcxu99DO6w2guzXFXpkPUVMMNIKv-mKRCATRwYpiPYvh6wiZgg/s4032/IMG_8885.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigQe8ezK_HOIVBOC97XuKvW7_wOP7uesoOfHoBa58yxnwQiOWr6Gw6Z5s7qUA4lB2KErUoI3tHG_XdMJwh6cAitxI5zPcxu99DO6w2guzXFXpkPUVMMNIKv-mKRCATRwYpiPYvh6wiZgg/s320/IMG_8885.JPG" /></a></div><p><br /></p><br /><span style="font-family: courier;"><br /></span><p></p>JulieRighttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11008129430036620838noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4870553668615239101.post-67809859922100284292020-07-07T20:24:00.001-04:002020-07-07T20:24:26.770-04:00Backgrounds to the forefront<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">I'm loving a technique that my friend Brenda shared with me. I have summarized the steps.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">It's similar to the result you'd get if you worked with your gel plate. This technique allowed me to pull out and use supplies I've had hanging around for a long time.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">Here are the steps:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">1. Use large sheet of cardstock or mixed media paper. Use smooth paper and working big is the most productive option.</span><div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font></div><div><span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">2. Draw random overall pattern with colored pencils (non water based). If you use regular pencils then the lines will remain after you apply water to the page. If you use watercolor pencils, the lines will blend.</span></div><div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj333GF8UnxhuJ0bu6mF6Qwq1hcC4M8HtoL-ITlzBzqoH0raSdrzs-NemHp5x4ieC2Uvwit7GVgK_QE915Ip5bap8qiIRdc2cn72pjek0G7_apJmioCWd4FGkHMxtMagI6l8ED9UE_4cqM/s4032/IMG_8906.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj333GF8UnxhuJ0bu6mF6Qwq1hcC4M8HtoL-ITlzBzqoH0raSdrzs-NemHp5x4ieC2Uvwit7GVgK_QE915Ip5bap8qiIRdc2cn72pjek0G7_apJmioCWd4FGkHMxtMagI6l8ED9UE_4cqM/s320/IMG_8906.JPG" /></a></div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">3. Use water soluble crayons (can use water colors instead) and make circles or scribbles all over the page using colors that work harmoniously together. My suggested palette is red/orange/yellow or blue/green/yellow. Leave some white space but go for a lot of color.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">For interest, you can add small areas of black.</span></div><div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-bngNqzYe2ybnR7TyGT3kNJ-01GG52OsQJH3jDV1BESddM92_Ye2uJMG9cBZCBtS_AHTNYwICb6Yr9azLJYETHVsk9TOUE_lQTzLJxR-ZSD970WGiulwbKsCn1IX2DdziM_OiR126Ds/s4032/IMG_8905.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-bngNqzYe2ybnR7TyGT3kNJ-01GG52OsQJH3jDV1BESddM92_Ye2uJMG9cBZCBtS_AHTNYwICb6Yr9azLJYETHVsk9TOUE_lQTzLJxR-ZSD970WGiulwbKsCn1IX2DdziM_OiR126Ds/s320/IMG_8905.JPG" /></a></div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">If you have non-water soluble crayons like oil pastels, use them sparingly and make small marks like "+" or other scribbles on the page. These will not blend and will be visible after you have applied other layers of color.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">4. Pull out a water brush or use a paint brush with clean water and blend the colors so that you have blended most of the color on the page. Leaving small areas of white is fine.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">5. Dry the page with a heat gun or allow to dry.</span></div><div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn5P-bDKVAZzui4PUBGncpJlkEkZ3shzxisshdF-Dnsweli_AVNl1xQrRMiCNocBXBxR_xzqLTPdC5U4cHWVYg7vv26LZX7lq7H9X_7iHVH-pr3sFjiGGr-8qx172mGZB-DmdsYLOv56Y/s4032/IMG_8913.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn5P-bDKVAZzui4PUBGncpJlkEkZ3shzxisshdF-Dnsweli_AVNl1xQrRMiCNocBXBxR_xzqLTPdC5U4cHWVYg7vv26LZX7lq7H9X_7iHVH-pr3sFjiGGr-8qx172mGZB-DmdsYLOv56Y/s320/IMG_8913.JPG" /></a></div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">6. Select a tool to apply paint to a stencil, choose white acrylic paint and two other light colors that go with the colors of your background. Put a small amount of paint on a palette. Choose two to three stencils, vary the openness of the stencil so that you can apply a large area of paint or a small area of paint.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">Using the tool, stencil paint on the background and cover up areas that are too bright, or those you don't like.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">7. Stamp using small "mark making" stamps that have patterns, or little doodle-like designs. Don't try to make the stamping perfect, if the stamp is unmounted, use only portions of it to stamp. Use black permanent ink to stamp and feel free to stamp off the first impression and use the ghost prints which are lighter in color.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">8. Cut out large letters free-hand from the paper, draw the letters on the back and cut them out or use your die-cut machine. Trim the letters in black and use a marker to add lines and doodles to the letters. This will help make the colors pop. Adding black pulls the work together and helps make the colors pop.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;">Here are samples of my final projects. The top two cards are using letters I sketched with pencil and cut out. The bottom card has letters from my die-cut machine.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk_a8gRF6dZrFGW-jEQkEhcyMJAuZBx9Nb66XMVPftRdG6vy21tIkpJ__lrijTXACjceEFrnW3m_NEhYDn6gjcvi20RykeEGyUgSSZxynJLcbkV-D7VyUB1A5mEPCL310EF2pkcXxGY_0/s3659/IMG_8945.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2785" data-original-width="3659" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk_a8gRF6dZrFGW-jEQkEhcyMJAuZBx9Nb66XMVPftRdG6vy21tIkpJ__lrijTXACjceEFrnW3m_NEhYDn6gjcvi20RykeEGyUgSSZxynJLcbkV-D7VyUB1A5mEPCL310EF2pkcXxGY_0/s320/IMG_8945.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: "courier new", courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div><div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKDEniClxJCxeUizJkfjQGkcoJEPVNypwu9SGuOtQ1LhmKivxaQEc6UMvQIyn1kwMMkdC3zaRzeHHNF_LXMR39wokuKE8IQ0Sc1HOlE56KC0Nn7lGP5EjNUhTuO9ndoNKUHBiCap44UUk/s3939/IMG_8915.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2954" data-original-width="3939" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKDEniClxJCxeUizJkfjQGkcoJEPVNypwu9SGuOtQ1LhmKivxaQEc6UMvQIyn1kwMMkdC3zaRzeHHNF_LXMR39wokuKE8IQ0Sc1HOlE56KC0Nn7lGP5EjNUhTuO9ndoNKUHBiCap44UUk/s320/IMG_8915.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVlCX92LL7SiCQeLw4HyFMxL66Wfdm4W_qNhZiw_2n_zJUoQcT7AoniJTXRTEwLU63iHImJfn8T5zu1oukdb5UC4J5sDXj_zppE8aXjwErbFwy8VV5iZnQodFwlY7Txcug-h2GVGLq1Wg/s4032/IMG_8914.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVlCX92LL7SiCQeLw4HyFMxL66Wfdm4W_qNhZiw_2n_zJUoQcT7AoniJTXRTEwLU63iHImJfn8T5zu1oukdb5UC4J5sDXj_zppE8aXjwErbFwy8VV5iZnQodFwlY7Txcug-h2GVGLq1Wg/s320/IMG_8914.JPG" /></a></div><font face="courier new, courier, monospace"><br /></font>

Today my dear friend Judy taught a mini class to a group of us and we had a wonderful time making paper beads. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">What you need to make the beads:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">strips of text weight paper 11 inches or longer cut in rectangles or long triangles</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Diamond Glaze or Glossy Accents adhesive</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">skewer or toothpicks</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">box or plastic container to use for skewer to dry beads</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">black marker or Krylon leafing pen (Optional)</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I made a video to show how to make the beads. This is my first demo video and I have to say there's room for improvement. Sorry if the video gets a bit out of focus, hope I'll get better.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The process of making these beads is very easy and extremely relaxing. I would say if you have any decorative paper that is fibrous, it would be great to make beads. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">When you make your first few beads you can start with catalogs. My favorite is Paper Source because they are brightly colored and the paper is mat finish text weight, perfect for the beads. Hope you give it a try!</span></div>

Our teacher Eric M Scott conducted an amazing class called Beyond Blank Pages.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">He is an inspiring artist and I blogged about his books Journal Fodder 365 and Journal Junkies Workshop, years ago. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><a href="https://journalfodderjunkies.com/eric" target="_blank">Eric's Bio</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><a href="https://ericscottart.com/blog" target="_blank">Eric's amazing blog</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><a href="https://ericscottart.com/artwork" target="_blank">Eric's shop</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Eric-M.-Scott/e/B002ST7MAW%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share" target="_blank">Eric's early books on Amazon</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The class was AMAZING. Check out his workshop schedule <a href="https://ericscottart.com/events-and-workshops" target="_blank">here</a> and get hold of his books. They provide an inspirational approach to journaling. Eric took us beyond just the visual aspect of the journal because he had us do writing exercises and this significantly expanded the depth of our pages. I had never done this type of exercise with creating my visual art and I found the process extremely enlightening. I think it added to my creative process.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">We had 9 students in the class and lots of room in the paper arts studio. We learned new techniques and then were given time to try them out. There were so many techniques that Eric shared, we filled a giant white board. The beautiful part about the John C Campbell Folk school (JCC Folk school) is that we had five days of class and it seemed like we could have spent five weeks using all the techniques.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The other joy of the class was meeting a wonderful and generous group of students in the class. Everyone was a pleasure to meet, talk to, collaborate and create with.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">It is not an understatement to describe this vacation and class as a religious experience. The connections I made, the beauty of the location, the gift of time spent doing what I love, made this so special. I will never forget it.</span><br />

It was mesmerizing. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Here's the video: <a href="https://youtu.be/boizp1tkS4I" target="_blank">Dot painting tutorial</a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I purchased a kit with some basic tools from Amazon. They included styluses with various sizes of balls. Also, the kit included colored rods, that allow for larger dots. The kit also came with a stencil, paint palette and a white pencil.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I started painting on some rocks then paper mache boxes. I always start by painting the substrate black, which makes the final result more impactful.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Here's a video where I decorated a page in my new tag book. It's so relaxing to do dot painting. I dispense two or three sections of the same color, then added white to make lighter hues. I repeated with a few colors, and added some white to my palette.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/A1WPV5oo-jg/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/A1WPV5oo-jg?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Here are some additional samples:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXAUeZ5CHVIW2_AKVu7MSe4EGLJK7TskOcBgbREqKICWNPSKCVoAmLYi9mSvzUtGNAvqxv8vjc4eZkfl9nk2EkE7POMvnyU0uDqmDtVdZrw9qn6Ske-QFDJL4sILGS9dP409f4kzFnPuo/s1600/IMG_6405.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXAUeZ5CHVIW2_AKVu7MSe4EGLJK7TskOcBgbREqKICWNPSKCVoAmLYi9mSvzUtGNAvqxv8vjc4eZkfl9nk2EkE7POMvnyU0uDqmDtVdZrw9qn6Ske-QFDJL4sILGS9dP409f4kzFnPuo/s320/IMG_6405.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The YouTube video provides examples of tools you can make at home to do dot painting with things you probably already have. My recommendation is to dig out some acrylic paints and try it. Just try to use fluid paints that are runny. You can try to dilute heavier paints if that's all you have. If they are thicker, the circles you paint will not dry smooth, and will have too much texture. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Also, after working with them for a while they start to get dried out in the palette, and they are less effective for this technique.</span><br />

Once the CDC decided we should all wear masks, and preferably the ones made at home, I've been asking my family, friends, neighbors and colleagues if they need masks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">It's been an evolution after I started with one style of mask, above and switched to a different style, that has a wire at the top to fit around the top of your nose. Also, it has a pocket so that you can insert a filter.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwyG3W92EzlDDAQX3hr7Y7GxQb8HqHavRKPv_JrKW0gd5e97c64SEIYrldas64BoAXx92of6aSM3Ol6OD-QNoasFbAvUSlFidRFSBabXgktyBqqc5Kd2D-RrRtYTRfKH4BHnxMpIs5A8/s1600/IMG_8741.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1203" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwyG3W92EzlDDAQX3hr7Y7GxQb8HqHavRKPv_JrKW0gd5e97c64SEIYrldas64BoAXx92of6aSM3Ol6OD-QNoasFbAvUSlFidRFSBabXgktyBqqc5Kd2D-RrRtYTRfKH4BHnxMpIs5A8/s320/IMG_8741.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I've gone through my fabric stash and used fabrics that I had on hand. I had to wash the fabric and dry it to make sure it was pre-shrunk then iron the fabric so I could cut it accurately. I went through several packages of elastic that I had in my stash, and ran out, then ordered more on Amazon. I was ahead of the curve in ordering so thankfully my order came in last week. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">When I didn't have elastic I made masks using fabric strips as ties and learned how to make bias tape. I've really enjoyed learning new sewing techniques. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I ended up mailing 15 packages to those who were out of town. Here are samples of the fabrics and styles. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I decided to estimate the materials I've used so far:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">10+ yards of material</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">106 yards of thread (wish I'd counted bobbins)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">75+ feet of elastic</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">28+ feet of floral wire</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">3 needles</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">One realization is that I have a fabric addiction. It's not always easy to part with some of the fabrics I have on hand. My solution is to make something from small scraps of the fabric I used for the masks. It's like my paper addiction, the fabrics I've collected are so beautiful that sometimes it's hard to say goodbye to them! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">So, I realized I should cut them up into small pieces and then plan make something in order to incorporate them in my journal, and document this journey. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Before I cut the pieces from the scrap pile into 2" square pieces, I decided I'd try a time-lapse video. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Artists are sharing ideas and techniques to help everyone get through this Covid-19 insanity. Some are doing Facebook/Instagram live sessions. There is a lot of inspiration flying around right now. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Dina Wakley has been doing demos since mid-March and here's the link that inspired this post:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><a href="https://youtu.be/sJZgVX4eZdY" target="_blank">Dina's Tab Book March 18</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">So after watching Dina's demo I decided I had to make the tab book. I told a group of artist friends and we decided to do a virtual session and make them together. It was really fun.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I took chip board, pieces that were 8 1/2 by 11" and cut them in half. I painted half of them with regular gesso on both sides, and the rest with Ranger black gesso. Then let them dry.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilG2FromJbPyrKt6SFpDqbryaQ1L2OBXKcij08sSp2fcQFgEW1euJ8GFxPXsIvmmJCODAWqbC1n7N61Qu_axu242sEovHyR3JyGnGv-QurW7_gUw8MRAaRiqJRadlmqq5KXpLTcSp8Z74/s1600/IMG_8742.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilG2FromJbPyrKt6SFpDqbryaQ1L2OBXKcij08sSp2fcQFgEW1euJ8GFxPXsIvmmJCODAWqbC1n7N61Qu_axu242sEovHyR3JyGnGv-QurW7_gUw8MRAaRiqJRadlmqq5KXpLTcSp8Z74/s320/IMG_8742.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Dina suggested using sticky back canvas for the tabs to "bind" this book. I discovered a package from long ago and decided to save this because I'd love to make a book with colorful binding. Since I had a black and white book in the works, I opted for white duct tape.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I find that the easiest way to manage pieces of duct tape is to use a cutting mat and line up and cut the pieces in advance. I made a stash of pieces that are 2" by 1.5" and these will be my tabs that will secure the pages of the book.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ybQpYkSkS3JtZAGSYDqiW9oaFjpcRaRFlPR06xVtFZLVPGjQqsn5IQJ29YBsJOf2JxOikdvo5f4zmFNLHsD-tNPO1xF3XE39GJl-mGXGl2eMv7ydFYxd5YQMcX-MJZp93ygu-BexFzc/s1600/IMG_8744.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ybQpYkSkS3JtZAGSYDqiW9oaFjpcRaRFlPR06xVtFZLVPGjQqsn5IQJ29YBsJOf2JxOikdvo5f4zmFNLHsD-tNPO1xF3XE39GJl-mGXGl2eMv7ydFYxd5YQMcX-MJZp93ygu-BexFzc/s320/IMG_8744.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">In her demo Dina used 2 tab pieces on one page and then 1 and alternate for all the pages. She suggests other options, and since my pages are larger, I opted to use 3 on one and 2 on the other, alternating them. This secured the journal nicely. We followed her instructions and voila, I have a journal.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBiQL3JjCSgW6t7FtV2o-jwRZzLebFHnLbDergt7YClAZp3LvpB3ZzZq2mSXRFAI59dIweGkdA2kAguIPA3w8OiXGEfIamRMnRFGbzM_TY66rdWJ_PpH3GSmKwahsVZaWBESufhET2KXg/s1600/IMG_8747.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBiQL3JjCSgW6t7FtV2o-jwRZzLebFHnLbDergt7YClAZp3LvpB3ZzZq2mSXRFAI59dIweGkdA2kAguIPA3w8OiXGEfIamRMnRFGbzM_TY66rdWJ_PpH3GSmKwahsVZaWBESufhET2KXg/s320/IMG_8747.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The inner pages have either two corresponding tabs, or three. I am not bothered by the fact that I didn't line them up evenly, as you can see below. I'll be filling this book up with art and hopefully the tabs will melt away.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">We took a vacation to North Carolina, specifically Brasstown, the home of the John C Campbell Folk School! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><a href="https://www.folkschool.org/" target="_blank">Click to find out more about the school</a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The first day my friend Jo-Ellen and I took a class with Karen Stack who has an amazing leather business called Gulland Artisans.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Check out her Etsy shop: </span><a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/GullandArtisans" style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;" target="_blank">Gulland Artisans</a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Karen taught a leather journal class, which is the same class she offers at the folk school, but the class was full and had a wait list. In fact, Karen will be teaching a class where you can create your own leather bag at the school in June and October and one is already full. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br />We loved the personal attention of taking the class in Karen's studio. I enjoyed every step of the process. We learned how to work with the tools to make designs in the leather. In addition we tooled the flaps, stitched the journal cover and attached snaps. Finally, Karen taught us the Coptic stitch for the book we made for our cover. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Working with leather is so rewarding. I enjoyed the process and Karen's studio is a great art refuge. My goal is to come back and take another class with Karen.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Here's Karen shop and studio in Brasstown.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">P.S. Stay safe everyone. Please keep creating art and supporting local businesses through this pandemic. We can take things one day at a time and be kind to others. Even to those who are rude and irritable (I'm guessing it's a sign that they are stressed and scared). Find silver linings where you can. For me, working from home and having a job are major blessings. I now have more time to make art and that's what will get me through</span><span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">. We are all trying to figure it out. Dan ordered the Pomme de Noel. It was apple cheesecake mousse, vanilla caramel, and pecan streusel. The exterior was a candy crust in the shape of an apple. I've never seen a dessert as beautiful as this. Every bit was edible.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;">Okay, time to come clean on what is apparently an addiction! I have so much washi tape. Years ago I got the We R Memory makers washi tape dispenser. Needless to say I have way too much tape to store in the dispenser. The nice thing is that it allows you to hold 20 rolls of tape. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;">The center of the dispenser has a small peg in the center, that can be used for rolls of tape. I noticed that you could pull this peg out and I thought, it's too bad this isn't taller, because I'd love to store all my tape in this holder. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;">Coincidentally, my friend Pat recently gave me a 3" binder rings to hold washi tape. It's a great solution because you can see the rolls, group them and get to them easily.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;">Then I got a brainstorm, what if I ordered a piece of plastic pipe that would attach to the dispenser along with the 3" binder rings.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; text-align: left;">I ordered the 2 foot pipe from Amazon and it fit perfectly. Then I ordered binder rings. I was disturbed and amazed when I went to group all the rolls of tape on the rolls and stack them on the new pipe attached to the dispenser. This is the tower of washi.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We were invited to 6 weddings, that's a lot of cards. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Here are some of the projects for this year:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Shower card using piece of white embossed paper to make the dress. Just cut a waistline and add a ribbon. So fun and easy.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqkJQw-EWzv5HOmhyphenhyphen-V_RE9gnxpRmNsn8yGwZ61WwqDKAhG6pztPDxdNPD3qXDoqMK_5LcaN0_yzd8j7acCkvrxwKXrBidnxuCju1r5156sTOywV7FRBfRnEEnGUTJELGhPF8bKCawkJw/s1600/RenderedImage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1257" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqkJQw-EWzv5HOmhyphenhyphen-V_RE9gnxpRmNsn8yGwZ61WwqDKAhG6pztPDxdNPD3qXDoqMK_5LcaN0_yzd8j7acCkvrxwKXrBidnxuCju1r5156sTOywV7FRBfRnEEnGUTJELGhPF8bKCawkJw/s320/RenderedImage.jpg" width="251" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">The envelope had to be decorated as well. Used the Hero Arts Ombre ink pads, Mermaid and Light Purple to Grape Purple. The stamp set is one of my favorites, Concord and Ninth Bold and Brushy! The set includes the double-lined box and a solid stamp to make a solid background for each letter. The solid stamp is perfect to show off the ombre inks!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz8VxbldL5rwcReiM_dOBhaBxFqsh3EQcsH4cebs5ijt8tjHYU0pLKKgLdT98RekR5OeWouhpd6BjynV9iWh1qXoSv0u61wnZJXiG71SSTxX7oNU1POUKF4SL3mQwTK3Y5Nm1GdEELi4g/s1600/IMG_5948.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1529" data-original-width="1600" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz8VxbldL5rwcReiM_dOBhaBxFqsh3EQcsH4cebs5ijt8tjHYU0pLKKgLdT98RekR5OeWouhpd6BjynV9iWh1qXoSv0u61wnZJXiG71SSTxX7oNU1POUKF4SL3mQwTK3Y5Nm1GdEELi4g/s320/IMG_5948.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Finally, the card below was one of my favorites. I used my Brother Scan and Cut, found an image of a tie and removed the "Mr" from the tie! Then all I needed was an & and Congratulations. I did weld the letters in the word together, so the die cut for Congratulations is one piece, instead of separate letters.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The white card was scored on a score board and it was three lines in a row, with a couple spaces between. Then I mounted it on gold and black card stock.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQSKtI1Rm6DBVKu2o4VuOFHWM2MTByj6hBmC0NyvzwZDadZHs_ohqSFGb3uxer1f20hRjgn5HKAr7mYmd6s9RxvhtuGDz6TRcV-N6_WblW3KoLeVGGySNZhpVInPY9t3MVmpIWU2s5Ug/s1600/IMG_5947.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1392" data-original-width="1600" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQSKtI1Rm6DBVKu2o4VuOFHWM2MTByj6hBmC0NyvzwZDadZHs_ohqSFGb3uxer1f20hRjgn5HKAr7mYmd6s9RxvhtuGDz6TRcV-N6_WblW3KoLeVGGySNZhpVInPY9t3MVmpIWU2s5Ug/s320/IMG_5947.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Finally, here's a wedding cake card I made. I used the embossing folder to make the cake layers. Then I edged each with a layer of beaded trim. I used a tiny flower hole punch and adhered a small gem to the center of each. These flowers perfectly adorn the cake. The background is made using another embossing folder that creates the vertical lines. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Finally, the thin white and black ribbon finishes it off. I have included the sizes for each of the cake layers so you can get an idea of the proportions. I rounded each piece so that the top edges look more cake-like.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8SyXmiQ2OIxUokwtRSdvc1WNpNGe1Zh9BVZmwuzxQnQdilVc44wi8bFK2Za32Pvy2vAGxFeP7gx1k3rbNRWxr95tbaXbqINfzI0T0Tf3-ak6f8i98MD6svKwilsuH3IRJDIsVhbBEK7s/s1600/IMG_6168.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8SyXmiQ2OIxUokwtRSdvc1WNpNGe1Zh9BVZmwuzxQnQdilVc44wi8bFK2Za32Pvy2vAGxFeP7gx1k3rbNRWxr95tbaXbqINfzI0T0Tf3-ak6f8i98MD6svKwilsuH3IRJDIsVhbBEK7s/s320/IMG_6168.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Great thing about this card is that if you hand-deliver to the wedding, no issues with trying to put this in the mail. </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">In January 2019 I went to Longwood Gardens and they had the most gorgeous displays using paper of all kinds. This piece really got my attention. I thought it was something I could make for our house.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">So in the fall when I was in the Poconos with friends on a walk, I found the stick! That was all I needed. I saved boxes and picked up three kinds of wrapping paper, some jute and gift embellishments.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8owrjyZSZObQ5JnxGbW8pp-L8EtLAwFQBoUdlbnJw2f9JHePgS-tMqFz_jWSZj9z0UoRY_ZaYV2dma5IzIPNuul-e38agmG3nEeQm5BdyLZCW7O0B27WLSNFu7YsQ9gXpK2RQ8NQrIcY/s1600/IMG_5366.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8owrjyZSZObQ5JnxGbW8pp-L8EtLAwFQBoUdlbnJw2f9JHePgS-tMqFz_jWSZj9z0UoRY_ZaYV2dma5IzIPNuul-e38agmG3nEeQm5BdyLZCW7O0B27WLSNFu7YsQ9gXpK2RQ8NQrIcY/s320/IMG_5366.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I really enjoyed arranging the boxes by size, choosing which paper to use and of course, embellishing the gift boxes. Then I realized I didn't have a big wide open wall to place my "wreath" against so it had to free float near our stairs. This made hanging it easy but the only trick was to encourage the boxes to face forward and not to swing around the wrong way.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Love how this turned out!!</span><br />

I had gotten a new sewing machine in order to recover patio chairs. That was when I had the urge to sew something on a smaller scale.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Since then, I've branched into fabrics and I've made dozens of zippered bags. I got the instructions and how to from YouTube and Bluprint's Angela Waters the Midnight Quilt Show host and overall adorable quilting teacher. She's so fun to watch!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Here's a link to the YouTube video: <a href="https://youtu.be/V7VtSV1q8ng" target="_blank">Link to Quilted Zipper Pouch Angela Waters</a></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Because of the thorough instructions my first attempt was a success. I couldn't believe I made something so cute!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I then had scraps to use up and I decided to quilt smaller pieces together and use them to make smaller versions of the quilted bags. This is one of those cases where I truly LOVE to make these little practical works of art!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Key take away: it's the fabric that makes these bags extra fun. Joann Fabrics had been selling state themed fabrics. So I had to make Florida and Pennsylvania bags using these fat quarters.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Here are some of my projects:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ9kEYOfarFs-O1k_3TXMlsq5zPzYW9bsKBHQU_MDiHrh49jLgn_QFAy4J6c87mrhcc7dL18vP5nKpA5eFC5-GDh0pyb7t_nKvnpte5Ek4u_fJGhYq1-wliwUa4tjhdCnHsgkU7vtjTG0/s1600/58761005820__2ECB28A9-D0FD-47A8-A40A-55B9FDC3829B.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="712" data-original-width="1600" height="142" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ9kEYOfarFs-O1k_3TXMlsq5zPzYW9bsKBHQU_MDiHrh49jLgn_QFAy4J6c87mrhcc7dL18vP5nKpA5eFC5-GDh0pyb7t_nKvnpte5Ek4u_fJGhYq1-wliwUa4tjhdCnHsgkU7vtjTG0/s320/58761005820__2ECB28A9-D0FD-47A8-A40A-55B9FDC3829B.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Below I used scraps, sewn together to make a small version of the quilted bags. The regular size is 16" by 15.5" and my zippers won't allow anything larger than this. You can easily go smaller though!!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I used the pattern of the fabric to help line up the quilting in the super hero bag below. I change the type of stitch for the quilting on each bag. Sometimes a straight stitch, sometimes a decorative stitch, it just depends. That's the creative part.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I found another new favorite artist on YouTube. I'm a big fan of Vanessa The Crafty Gemini who does all kinds of videos on various sewing projects. She also offers classes and I recently signed up for her bag of the month club. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">You cannot believe how many amazing free videos she has. She's also a teacher on Bluprint!! She had a gift series in December of 2018 and made zippered bags out of vinyl. OMG I love these and I've made a ton of them. Ultra easy and fast!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">After I had worked with vinyl my mind started to go crazy with ideas to make a bag that was vinyl in the front, so you can see the contents, but made primarily out of fabric. Voila, here's the bag I crafted myself. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigfgp63KeJeTwThKemm_Uyr5s2LvB0D4163uHQbe0rkNr1-5NyZ5smo_2PVt21FvFDHCP79QvsfJIX1JaXadDyKWj1yejYZ4XhgAgbi0NNp-GqHB8wlTk_mI5Ij4T9OhT4Oh6epA-edV4/s1600/IMG_6387.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="186" data-original-width="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigfgp63KeJeTwThKemm_Uyr5s2LvB0D4163uHQbe0rkNr1-5NyZ5smo_2PVt21FvFDHCP79QvsfJIX1JaXadDyKWj1yejYZ4XhgAgbi0NNp-GqHB8wlTk_mI5Ij4T9OhT4Oh6epA-edV4/s1600/IMG_6387.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The bag below was actually my first attempt and I realized that you need to have fabric around the vinyl because you don't want to see the seams through the front of the bag. The bag below was a great first pass, and I use it and still love it but learned an important lesson.</span><br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Another small bag using fabric scraps. The fun is in picking the fabrics, zipper colors, stitches to use and thread colors. Truly a perfect outlet for me.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">So I wanted to share shots from December 22 when we went downtown Philly to the Christmas Market. We appropriately hit the Nut House in the Reading Terminal and then went shopping.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Dan got chicken and waffles for brunch. It was delicious! Really gets you into the Christmas spirit!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">So ever since the new year I'm obsessed with cleaning out the detritus in our house. Particularly the basement where storage is competing with my craft supplies. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Just to lay the groundwork on the type of hoarder I am, I've actually come across w2s from my earliest jobs dating back to the 80's. Now the silver lining is that these were all filed together and labeled, so it's not like this paperwork is stacked in aisles in my house and might fall and crush me. It's a journey.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Don't worry, those have been shredded and I'm setting about changing my habits. I think that this resurfaced when I had to shred and dispose of lots of my Mom's paperwork. It made me realize I can be like her and hold on to paperwork for much too long. I only want stuff that sparks joy, so I am yearning to de-clutter.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Side note: isn't it funny how newly discovered stuff that's been sitting around for decades can't be purged from your house fast enough?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">So the best part of this clean-out chore is finding little surprises. Essentially, time capsules. This one I had to share. My Barbie collection of accessories. This includes brightly colored plastic clothes hangers, princess phones, a color tv, turntable, Coca-Cola bottles and martini glasses. Also, brand named foods like Libby's corned beef, who knew?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The trip down memory lane is really fun and eventually I'll have to donate these. I'm sure some little girl would love to play with them!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Check out my Frida Kahlo costume from 2019. I did my eyebrows (using eyeliner), ordered some fun dangly earrings, donned a ton of rings and bracelets, made a wig from yarn, got a beautiful flowered headband and made a skirt from an old denim dress. I sewed a ruffle on it and attached ties to the back to make it like an apron skirt. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><br /></span>
